Summary

From the gardens of the Palace of Versailles to Beatrix Potter's garden in the Lake District, from Monet's garden in France to the Tivoli Gardens in Rome, from the Japanese garden in Portland, Oregon, to city gardens in Tokyo, this book is a wide-ranging celebration of all types of gardens around the globe。

Including formal French gardens and English landscape gardens; famous botanical gardens and little-known curiosities; Iranian and Persian gardens; grand, country-house gardens and inner-city gardens; Zen gardens, strolling Japanese gardens and Chinese gardens; medicinal gardens and one poison garden; knot gardens and Roman gardens, Amazing Gardens of the World explores a huge variety of the approaches and uses of gardening around the world over millennia。 In telling the stories of these places, the book touches on the lives of the people who worked in them, designed them, and owned them—people such as Prince Charles, Capability Brown, Gertrude Jekyll, Edith Wharton, and Agatha Christie。 Amazing Gardens of the World not only champions the splendor of the world's most magnificent gardens but also reveals many fascinating stories about the history of these places and the people who created them。

It is a real visual feast for the eyes, and a tonic for the soul to see so much beauty around the world! This is a book of gardens all over the globe, so as a keen gardener myself, it was fascinating to see the different styles and approaches to gardens from different perspectives。 It features royal palaces, parks, botanic gardens, homes of the rich and famous and features so many amazing approaches to the art of gardening and goes to show the importance of green spaces on every continent。There's also some great text alongside the beautiful photographs, that give you more insight into the gardens featured and the plants used, as well as the role these gardens have played over the years。I kept finding myself saying 'wow' as I turned each page to see a new perspective of a garden, from the traditional styles to the surreal and to the more recent fashions like roof gardens。 I could have easily looked at a million more photographs from gardens around the world, so I hope there'll be more editions in the future! It's a book that inspires, impresses and leaves you in awe of the creativity of gardeners over the years。 The photography is beautiful and it's a book that I will happily keep picking up to drool over for many years to come! 。。。more

Stunning is perhaps the most accurate word for describing both this book, and the featured gardens。From acres of tulips, to lush tropical foliage, you'll find pages and pages of drool-worthy photos that will thrill, and possibly even inspire you。 This is the perfect book for chasing away those winter blahs。 Many, many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me ooh and aah over this beautiful book。 Stunning is perhaps the most accurate word for describing both this book, and the featured gardens。From acres of tulips, to lush tropical foliage, you'll find pages and pages of drool-worthy photos that will thrill, and possibly even inspire you。 This is the perfect book for chasing away those winter blahs。 Many, many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me ooh and aah over this beautiful book。 。。。more

A great collection of magnificent gardens from around the world。 Some of the photographs could have been better, such as the less than picture perfect zinnia at Shalimar Gardens on page 126, the very blurry photo of Queen Elizabeth fountain at Pukekura Park on page 166 and the poorly edited photo of the pond at Dumbarton Oaks on page 187, but most of them were stunning。 I realize it's a lot to ask, but it would have been better if the same photographer spent a year or so traveling to these place A great collection of magnificent gardens from around the world。 Some of the photographs could have been better, such as the less than picture perfect zinnia at Shalimar Gardens on page 126, the very blurry photo of Queen Elizabeth fountain at Pukekura Park on page 166 and the poorly edited photo of the pond at Dumbarton Oaks on page 187, but most of them were stunning。 I realize it's a lot to ask, but it would have been better if the same photographer spent a year or so traveling to these places to get a cohesive style and the best quality for the book as a whole。 I love gardening, learning new gardening techniques and styles and learning about gardens I have never heard of before, and this book was a perfect taste of all of this。 I learned what pleaching is, I learned about the Great Banyan (could have included a better picture of this tree too), and I learned about Wendy Whiteley, who used gardening as therapy to overcome her heroin addiction and the loss of her husband and daughter。 Now I can do further exploration of her horticultural work。 I appreciated the little tidbits of history and explanation along with the photos, and I think this would a great overview book for anyone who is interested in gardening。 I received this book as an ARC, and this is my honest review。 Thank you NetGalley and Amber Books! 。。。more

The photography in this book is absolutely stunning! There are so many large, detailed, beautifully composed photographs that one could linger over this for hours。 Each series of photos is accompanied by brief but interesting facts about the history and significance of the featured garden。For being labeled as "Gardens of the World", over half of the content was gardens of Europe, with the entire rest of the world condensed into the remainder (the continent of South America had exactly 3 entries) The photography in this book is absolutely stunning! Amazing Gardens of the World by Vivienne Hambly is a visually stunning and very informative book that highlights many of the beautiful gardens around the world。If you like coffee table books and pictures of gardens (and also a lot of wonderful architecture since so many gardens are adjacent to castles and other impressive buildings) then this will appeal to you。 In addition to spanning the globe it also includes many types (very manicured to more natural, of plants native to the location to thos Amazing Gardens of the World by Vivienne Hambly is a visually stunning and very informative book that highlights many of the beautiful gardens around the world。If you like coffee table books and pictures of gardens (and also a lot of wonderful architecture since so many gardens are adjacent to castles and other impressive buildings) then this will appeal to you。 In addition to spanning the globe it also includes many types (very manicured to more natural, of plants native to the location to those with plants from all over)。I don't know if I ever mentioned in a review of these types of books how I used to utilize them。 If you're like me, even without going overboard you end up with quite a few oversized coffee table type books, usually far more than it makes sense displaying at the same time。 Between getting them regularly at bookstores or as gifts and getting some while traveling (lots of such books on castles and cathedrals) I had more than I had space to display。 So like many people I cycled through them on my coffee table, end tables, and sofa tables。 What became a bit of a tradition when I used to entertain small groups for dinner parties was for me to choose the books that I thought might start conversations。 Maybe someone's interests, maybe a recent trip they took, maybe just the more unusual ones。 Many times I would have them open to pages I thought might generate a comment or start a conversation。 Just to ease anyone's mind, I never left them open and flat for long periods of time。 The memory of doing that made me take a similar approach with this book。 There is a desktop computer in a common room and I opened the book to the page with Singapore's Gardens by the Bay, with an elevated walkway。 One of the people here is afraid of heights and is always fascinated to look at what she thinks of as crazy structures, you know, like bridges! Sure enough, she saw it and started a conversation about such things and got her to flip through the book。Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via NetGalley。 。。。more
